Australia/Singapore Investment Statistics

The stock of foreign direct investment in Australia sourced from Singapore, as at 31 December 2003, was AUD$2.6 billion.1 Measured at the same time, the stock of total investment in Australia sourced from Singapore was AUD$22.1 billion.

The stock of Australian direct investment in Singapore, as at 31 December 2003, was AUD$1.8 billion. As at 31 December 2003, the stock of total Australian investment in Singapore was AUD$11.9 billion.

Singapore was the third most important source of investment in Australia in for the financial year 2003-2004 in terms of ‘proposed’ total foreign direct investment; with proposed investment of over AUD$9.3 billion (see the table below). For further FIRB statistics see FIRB Annual Reports.

a. The investment identified as originating from Australia represents the contribution by Australian-controlled companies and Australian residents to the total investment associated with foreign investment proposals in which they are in partnership with foreign interests, but does not generally include the contribution attributable to minority Australian shareholders in companies with majority or controlling foreign shareholders.

b. These figures indicate the total number of proposals in which investors from the particular country have an interest. Proposals involving investment from more than one country count as one proposal for each of the countries concerned. Therefore, this number is greater that the number reported in Table 2.1.
